Visitor Centres (see Trail Information listing) provide trail conditions and route details. Favourite trails include: Banff Trail at the Canmore Nordic Centre (easy; 5.5 km/1 hr loop; 30 m elevation gain; Map 4, 8A)—conversation-friendly double track with centre skating lane meanders over gently rolling meadow terrain with Cascade and Bow Valley views; gear rentals on-site). Spray River Trail (easy; 10 km/3-4 hrs return; 200 m elevation gain; Map 3, 20M)—trail near the town of Banff along a road with Tunnel Mountain and Rundle Mountain views and picnic tables at 5 km; trailhead is past The Fairmont Banff Springs parkade. Boom Lake (intermediate; 10 km/3-4 hrs return; 180 m elevation gain; Map 1, 7B)—wide, gently rising trail between Banff and Lake Louise through the forest to an impressive mountain-ringed lake; quick, thrilling, not-too-difficult run back; Start Hwy 93S, 6 km south of Hwy 1. Fairview Loop (easy; 7.5 km/2 hr loop; 50 m elevation gain; Map 2, 14B)—trail with short and entertaining uphills, downhills and turns through forest and clearings with good views; park just east of The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
